The ground does not stay level

Guisborough sits at the foot of the Cleveland Hills, and it is unusual to find a long, truly flat garden here. Most runs are either stepped, each bay level with a triangular gap under it filled by a shaped gravel board, or raked so the boards follow the slope. Closeboard handles the rake best and is quoted here more than on the flatter estates, while panels are stepped.

Town centre, estates and the moor edge

The Westgate and Chaloner Street centre has older, walled and hedged boundaries where the work is often infill and gates rather than whole runs. The estates around Whitby Lane, Belmont and Hutton Village Road are standard garden fencing on more generous plots. Head towards Hutton Lowcross and the moor and the exposure jumps: wind funnels down off the hills, so solid panels have a hard life and hit and miss or closeboard is the durable answer.
